Merritt Edward Overlin Obituary (1928 - 2017)

Merritt Edward Squeak Overlin, 89, of Decatur, IL passed away on Sunday, October 15, 2017 in his residence. A service to honor and celebrate Merritts life will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, October 20, 2017 at Dawson & Wikoff North Chapel. The family will receive friends for a time of visitation from 6:00-8:00 p.m. on Thursday. Casual attire is requested. Merritt will be laid to rest in Mt. Gilead Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be directed to the American Cancer Society. Merritt was born on August 29, 1928 in Decatur, IL, the son of Donald and Lela (Maxwell) Overlin. He proudly served in the United States Naval Reserves during the Korean War. Merritt retired in 1985 from the Teamsters Local 279 where he was a truck driver for McLeans Trucking Company. He was an avid outdoorsman who enjoyed camping, hunting and canoeing. He also was an avid St. Louis Cardinal fan. Merritt is survived by his children: Lynn (Cherri) Overlin of Harristown, IL, Kim Overlin of Springfield, IL, Mark Overlin of Decatur, IL, Victor Overlin of Oakley, IL and Tammie Buchanan of Effingham, IL; brothers: Howard Overlin and Jerry (Karen) Overlin; sisters: Mary (David) Hanley, Norma Barton and Carol (Don) Peer; 13 grandchildren; 19 great grandchildren and one on the way. He was preceded in death by his parents, brothers: Don Overlin and Wayne Overlin, infant sister: Shirley Overlin and his grandson: Chad Overlin.
