Obituary for Gary Lynn Cooper

Gary Lynn Cooper 76, of Mt. Zion, IL passed away on Tuesday, October 1, 2019, at 6:00 p.m. in St. Mary’s Hospital.
Gary was born April 10, 1943, in Decatur, IL the son of James Victor and Jean Alyce (Head) Cooper. He married Peggy Ellen Duncan on September 15, 1961. She preceded him in death in 2007.
Gary proudly served in the US Air Force as a fuel specialist from 1961 to 1966. He was stationed in Thailand, Japan, and Shaw Air Force Base, South Carolina. When he returned to central Illinois, he began an apprenticeship in sheet metal work. Gary began working at Kelly Construction in 1983 and retired as Vice President of the company in 2009. Gary was an Eagle Scout, was an Indian Scout along with his son, assisted many times with fundraising and driving the trailer for his children in the Mt. Zion Swingsations, an avid golfer in his retirement years, and loved his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Gary is survived by his two daughters: Lori (Gary) Smalley of Mt. Zion and Kimberly (Ed) Knaus of Sullivan; son: James “Mike” (Jennifer) Cooper of Mt. Zion; grandchildren: Samantha Smalley and Robert “Bobby” Smalley; great-grandchildren: Rebecca, Christopher, and Jacob; and his beloved grandpup: Hunter.
Gary was preceded in death by his parents, wife, brother: Michael Lee Cooper; and his daughter: Alyce Lynnette Cooper.
The family will celebrate Gary’s life with visitation beginning at 12:00 Noon until 2:00 p.m. Monday, October 7, 2019, at Dawson & Wikoff Funeral Home, Mt. Zion. A funeral service will be held at 2:00 p.m., following the visitation. Burial will be in the Mt. Zion Township Cemetery with military rites provided by the Macon County Honor Guard and the US Air Force Honors team. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials be made in Gary’s memory to The Elephant Sanctuary, P.O. Box 393, Hohenwald, TN 38462. The family would personally like to thank all the staff of the 6th floor at St, Mary’s Hospital for their love and caring support during his final days.
